"We'll set up some fans" is the part of water damage work most people picture, and it's the part most often misunderstood. Structural drying is a controlled process aimed at the moisture inside building materials — not the moisture you can see on the floor.
Drying the structure, not the room
After extraction, the water that's left isn't standing anywhere. It's inside drywall, subfloor, framing, insulation, and cabinet bases. Those materials absorbed it while the water sat, and they release it slowly. Structural drying is the work of pulling that moisture back out before it causes secondary damage.
What the equipment is actually doing
- Air movers push high-velocity air across wet surfaces. That breaks up the thin layer of saturated air sitting against the material and speeds evaporation from inside it.
- Dehumidifiers pull that evaporated moisture back out of the air. Without them, evaporation just relocates water into the room's air, where it can settle somewhere else in the house.
The two only work as a pair. Air movement without dehumidification raises humidity; dehumidification without air movement leaves moisture locked in the materials. Placement matters too — angles, spacing, and which cavities get direct airflow are decisions, not defaults.
Why a box fan isn't the same thing
A household fan moves some air, but it has no capacity to remove moisture from that air, and nothing about it is measured. In a humid Georgia summer, running fans alone in a closed space can leave the air wetter than when you started.
Reaching enclosed spaces
Wall cavities, under-cabinet voids, and the space between subfloor and finished flooring dry far slower than open rooms because air doesn't circulate through them. Getting those spaces dry sometimes means creating controlled airflow paths into them — otherwise equipment runs for days while the cavity stays wet.
Monitoring and the endpoint
Structural drying is measured, not estimated. Moisture readings taken over the course of the job show whether materials are actually releasing moisture and when they've reached a dry standard. That's the endpoint — not a surface that feels dry, and not a fixed number of days.
Why this is the stage that prevents mold
Mold can begin within 24-48 hours where moisture remains. Extraction buys time; verified structural drying is what closes the window. A job that skips or rushes it can look complete while leaving exactly the conditions mold needs inside a wall.
